FOURTEEN

It was 6 in the morning and Hussain Kamran had just finished his exercise regimen. Hooja Singh came out with a glass of lemon juice water and honey for his sahib and tea without milk for the memsahib. Nilofer walked in and sat down on a chair under the umbrella. Her parents still did not know that she was a married woman now.

‘I have to leave a little early today,’ he said sipping the lemon water. ‘Today is the day I have to give the verdict on the Shamsudin Jameel Hyder case,’ he said. ‘You know Rubaiyat, today nothing can save this Sardar Hari Singh ji Brar and his three sons. The evidences and witnesses are all against them. They have firmly stood to testify against them. It is a clear case of rioting and multiple murders.’

Nilofer quietly listened but didn’t look at her father.

‘I was a little afraid that what if no witnesses would come forward?. What if they turned zero? Or what if no proofs and evidences were given? Like the Farooqui brothers, Sardar Hari Singh Brar and his three sons also would have gone scot-free. But, now I am sure that this man is surely going to the gallows with his three sons. Today, Mushtaq Jameel and a few others shall testify against the culprits in the court,’ Hussain said with a smile. Nilofer was in thoughts. She now realised what Saheb had meant when he had said that ‘one day this boy killed in Peshawar shall affect many lives’.

Around 7.30 a.m. in the morning, Mushtaq Jameel Hyder was getting ready for the court as a chief witness to the case that was orchestrated by Sardar Hari Singh ji Brar and his three sons to kill his brother. He was one of the 11 witnesses to testify today.

The truck full of angered Sikhs and Hindus drove inside his compound. The Hindus roaring ‘Har Har Mahadev’ and the Sikhs wielding lethal weapons in their hands were shouting, ‘Wahe guruji da Khalsa, wahe guru ji di fateh’. They angry mob jumped down from the vehicle and rushed inside his house. Mushtaq Jameel Hyder was caught unawares. There was not much time that they had for any dialogues. There were six gunshots heard. The furious mob had wiped out Mushtaq Jameel Hyder’s entire family for eternity. They were lying in the pool of their own blood.

In the next two hours, six squads of the irate men had wiped out the remaining 10 witnesses, from different places who were to testify against Hari Singh Brar and his sons. Their houses were burnt and their families were killed. And the ones who escaped, were hiding to find their way to the new Pakistan.

Sardar Hari Singh Ji Brar had wiped off every single witness to Jameel’s murder and rioting.

‘Now Hussain Kamran,’ the crowd shouted. ‘Let us stop him from reaching the court.’

At around 11 o’ clock, now the secular Indian Muslim Hussain Kamran Quereshi was supposed to give the final verdict against the mobster Sikhs and the Hindus in the court.
